Safe City Academy (SCA) enrolls gang and court involved youth, ages 16 to 19, in a GED reparation/work program. SCA serves approximately 50 high-risk, disconnected youth each year. DYC launched Safe City Academy to address the lack of remedial education and GED programs for youth who have criminal records and have dropped out of public schools.
This combination of risk factors often creates a barrier to traditional GED programs that fail to meet their immediate, basic need for wages and job preparation that could help them escape gang and drug activity.
Participants are provided with GED preparation, work readiness and mentoring services for which they are provided a small stipend.
